Alternate Media
Reflection
Translating
a written work into a visual, audio, or physical medium is no small task and
requires a deep and full understanding of it. I was able to take my cultural
analysis paper and transform it into a visual video that encompassed the same
concepts and made the same points, however it does not use any references made
in the paper and none of the same text. I started with stripping down my essay
to the “bones” and focusing on what the major themes I wanted to represent
visually because the video will be immensely shorter and less detailed than the
essay. I went point by point and chose clips that I deemed effective in getting
my argument across without overwhelming the audience. Attempting to keep with
the original progression of my paper I started with a “hook” type intro that
gave a chronological background to my issue in order to reiterate that this is
a cultural as well as a historical close reading. Due to the fact that the
video couldn’t expand on every issue I came up with two generalized themes that
were present in each of my written subtopics. I then found clips that fit under
each theme for each type of media that I examined in my close reading of the
Self-Sexualization of women in media throughout history. I avoided focusing on
the novel itself I chose originally but rather took conceptual pieces in order
to better suit it for the film format. This process allowed me to not only
research and create an argument but also gave me the opportunity to see it live
and in a context that is very prevalent in my life. The context of my piece is
very relevant especially to our class demographic so to be able to use visuals
that we are exposed to every day helped
me and I sure help the audience better understand and connect to my argument
and close reading overall.
